The Hottest Bags for High School Grads: Four Bags I Wish I had in College

With graduation time quickly approaching, I’ve been looking at laptop bags that would be great for college-bound students.  As a somewhat recent graduate myself, I’m realizing that I wasted a lot of time and energy being unorganized in college. I was one of the thousands of students who carried a laptop to class at my university, but I crammed it in a backpack that wasn’t built to carry such important cargo. (I went through two laptops in my four years of college, and the surviving computer has more dents and scratches than it deserves.) So here are brief reviews of the top four laptop bags for college students:

Shuttle Laptop Backpack from Skooba

backpack laptop bag, Skooba's Shuttle Laptop Backpack in Grey and Orange

The Skooba Shuttle Laptop Backpack is basically like putting your laptop in a padded safe.  Its “Air Square protection system” keeps the laptop cushioned in pockets of air, providing shock absorption without adding weight.  With 15+ pockets, the Shuttle Laptop Backpack is the perfect remedy for anyone entering college and feeling disheveled. This backpack is a comfortable carry, too. The contoured shoulder straps and ventilated back panel are definitely features I would have appreciated while trekking across campus. Another convenience that few bags offer is the a wide-base design, which keeps the standing upright when you set it down. Also, by the time I left college the cycling had started.  More college students are carrying laptop backpacks (versus briefcases) because it’s easy to bike with. I also love the color schemes, which make this backpack great for guys and gals alike.

Uni Cargo Laptop Tote from Ice Red Designs

The Uni Cargo Laptop Tote is a basic tote with lots of storage options.womens laptop bag, The Ice Red Design Uni Cargo Laptop Tote I love it because the easy-access front storage pockets are great for things like travel umbrellas and water bottles–two things that almost every college student carries. Also, it’s expandable, which makes it easy to carry as a purse or a laptop bag. And of course, there’s plenty of room for text books and other educational accessories inside.  Its made from ballistic nylon, which offers durability and a little bit of water protection. (It won’t survive a monsoon, but can definitely handle a mad dash across campus.) Simple, trendy, and durable.  The Uni Cargo Laptop Tote by Ice Red Designs is a basic design that any soon-to-be college student will need.

Courier from Baggallini

cool messenger laptop bag, Bagallini's Courier Laptop CaseMessenger bags are all the rage right now.  They’re convenient, fashionable, and durable.  And the Courier is no exception to the messenger bag trinity. The top flap’s magnetic closure keeps the contents of the Courier from spilling out in class, and the adjustable shoulder strap makes it possible to carry on the shoulder or across the chest. Multiple accessory pockets, like the ID card holder, will make it easy for your grad to keep track of his/her college ID card or other college vitals. And don’t forget about the back zippered pocket. This pocket can be unzipped from the bottom so it can slide easily over rolling luggage during travel.  This is a feature that will carry your grad past college and into the world of professionalism.

The Dots from Built NY

chic laptop bag, Built NY Dots Laptop Case

This laptop case is an attractive solution to what my college roommate called “organized chaos,” which often accompanies college life. Made from Neoprene (aka wetsuit material), the Dots is definitely a high-tech take on computer protection.  Its best feature is a double-sided, removable laptop sleeve; one side is reserved for the computer, and the other side stores multi-media accessories. This will save you a little bit of money, too, since I always recommend using a sleeve with any laptop bag.  When packed full, there’s still room in the Dots for a text book, notebook, or anything else needed to get your grad through class. Check out this video to see Built NY’s Dots in action:

So there you have it.  My top four graduation picks for high school graduates.  There are tons of options out there, so don’t limit yourself to four choices. But do let these be a push in the right direction! Trust me, these laptop bags rock.
