Save the Planet - Environmentally Friendly Netbooks (Mini Laptops)

Netbooks are generally more environmentally friendly than desktops and laptops. They are smaller (hence a smaller carbon footprint) and use much less energy. Nevertheless, among netbooks, there are some models that are more sustainable than others.

When shopping around for an environmentally friendly netbook, there are three things to look out for. You should make sure that it is Energy Star compliant, that the manufacturer has a good Greenpeace policy rate and if possible, be compliant with the RoHS directive (Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive). Another certification to look for is the EPEAT (Electronic Products Environmental Assessment Tool). The world would be a much better place if all electronic products adhered to these standards.

After much research, I was surprised to discover that most of the popular netbooks in the market are not very environmentally friendly. As for ‘green models’ there are two models worth mentioning. They are the Toshiba Mini and the Samsung NC10.

It can be safely said that the Toshiba Mini is currently one of the most environmentally friendly model in the market. It is Energy Start Compliant (5.0), compatible with the RoHS standards, and is EPEAT certified (Gold). Many popular netbook models out there such as the Asus Eee PC and Acer Aspire one have almost none of these certifications. Unfortunately, Toshiba only score 5.5 (out of 10) in Greenpeace’s policy rating. Nevertheless credit must be given for producing the Toshiba Mini netbook.

Another model worth mentioning is the Samsung NC10. It doesn’t have the certifications of the Toshiba Mini but Samsung scores an impressive 7.1 in Greenpeace’s policy rating. This score is currently one of the highest compared to many other electronic manufacturers in the market.

However, the bamboo is a woody plant that grows the fastest. And with that, ASUS is saying that they are helping the world save around 36 million number of trees each year. How To Choose A Laptop - What’s Available?

The total variety of laptops has grown, it seems, exponentially in the past few years. And in looking at the latest crop for this year, the trend is continuing. They come in a wide range of sizes, shapes and overall packages including some of the smallest, largest and thinnest models available.

The range of designs is not without purpose. Some have reduced size in order to lower cost or to improve portability. Some of the thinnest available are less than an inch thick and only weigh 3 to 5 pounds.

You may have lately seen advertisements for ‘netbooks.’ This is a new class of laptop that have very small (7 to 9 inch) screens and weigh only 2 to 3 pounds. The attraction is they only cost about $300.

As costs reduce on laptops, they really are a better choice over desktop computers. What you might lose in ability to upgrade and expandability, you gain in versatility and portability. With the right home accessories for your laptop you can fix the typical ergonomic issues of only using a laptop. And with the ever increasing public wireless access, a laptop is becoming even more advantageous over a desktop computer.

The Basic Choices (Categorized by screen size):

15.4 inch Models:

This is the direction you should go if you are leaning toward portability, lower cost and good performance as your key laptop attributes. Performance and cost are most closely related, so just know that the lower the cost the slower the processor. For most applications this is not an issue. However, if price outweighs performance then this is a great choice.

17 inch Models:

When power and performance are what you are looking for then point yourself toward these larger laptops. Obviously there are some things you have to sacrifice. For example portability is compromised slightly in that these models do not always fit in the smaller sized laptop bags. They also can weigh up to 6 pounds so if you tend to have long walks in airports this may be a consideration.

But what you gain is higher performance, obviously a larger screen and in most cases better graphic capability.

14.1 inch Models:

These guys fit right in the middle with slightly less weight at 5 to 6 pounds and slightly lower price then the larger 17 inch models.

13.3 inch Models:

These models are the best bet for light weight portability. Due to the smaller footprint these models have a higher price. They only weigh around 3 to 5 pounds. A word of caution on these smaller size models, make sure you check what is included within the frame of the laptop. Although these models seem more portable, many of them require external storage or external DVD players.

Netbooks:

These have been referred to as ’sub-notebooks’ but are now generally called netbooks. They are very small with screens in the range of 7 to 10 inches and are targeted toward users that focus on email and Web browsing.

Key Features to Compare When Laptop Shopping:

Processors:

This can appear confusing. To simplify; For most users for home and school look for a laptop that has a ‘Pentium’ Dual Core or AMD Turion X2. For the user that is looking for more performance (and higher cost…) then steer toward Core 2 Duo. There is a new version called Centrino 2 for laptops. A good choice for the ‘power’ user.

Hard Drive and Memory (RAM) Capacity:

The range of capacities for hard disk drives continues to increase dramatically. Laptops are typically offered with hard drives from 120 to 500 GB and from 1GB to 2 GB of RAM. Even if you have to pay a bit more, you should go with the 2GB of RAM as the new operating systems (Vista) require more memory and this can really enhance the laptop performance.

Operating Systems - Windows vs. Mac:

Windows has continued to be the most dominant operating system for laptops. However, if you talk to a Mac user they are usually die hard customers. Both are excellent and have their pluses and minuses. While Windows still has many more applications available, Macintosh users can still claim that they are less susceptible to viruses and spyware.

So go through this list and check off which attributes are most important and then you will be more then ready to make your laptop purchase. As with most electronic equipment, accessories can be very important to improve the efficiency and overall enjoyment of your laptop. Make sure you investigate the right accessories and add them to your list.

1: Laptop Case / Bag

As the newest member of the mobile computing force, you’re required to take an oath of safe computing.

And that starts with investing in the most important of laptop accessories - a laptop bag. You can’t very well go traipsing around the world with your laptop exposed to the elements.

When it comes to laptop bags, you can spend $25 for a small case made from less expensive materials on up to several hundred dollars for one made of top-grain cowhide.

However, in the end, the most important consideration is whether your case can hold your laptop, plus all the other goodies that go with it (like the ones described here).

2: Software

Did your laptop come with software? If so, did it come with the right software - the software you actually need to perform whatever tasks you need to perform?

Don’t just assume you have everything you need. You’ll probably need to add some software, as well as go online to update the software that was included.

3: A Real USB Mouse

Trackpads and eraser nubs that fill an obvious need. However, given the option, most people would rather user a real mouse.

If you stop and think for a moment, you’re likely to realize that many places where you’ll be computing actually are suitable for a real mouse.

So one of the most useful laptop accessories you can buy is a USB mouse, keep it in your bag, and use it whenever you’re able.

4: A Cat5 Ethernet Cable

Your built-in Ethernet port won’t do you much good if you get to your hotel room, discover an Ethernet connection, and don’t have a cable. Some hotels provide them; others don’t. Always come prepared with the right cable.

5: A Standard Telephone Cable

The same holds true for your modem connection. If you don’t have a cable to get you from your computer to the phone jack, you’re not going anywhere in cyberspace.

6: Disposable Cleansing Cloths

Over time, the display on your laptop is going to get dusty, or even smudgy. You’re playing Russian roulette with your laptop if you attempt to clean your display with paper towels and spray cleaners.

Instead, use disposable cleansing cloths. These essential laptop accessories are designed specifically to clean laptop displays. Always have a stash on hand.

7: USB Drive

A USB drive is a storage device about the size of your thumb that plugs directly into a USB port.

Capacity-wise, they’re relatively small - usually well under 100 MB. However, they’re very useful for moving files quickly and easily from one computer to another, e.g., moving a PowerPoint presentation from your laptop to your business associate’s laptop.

A USB drive also makes a great temporary backup medium for the really important files you create on the road.

8: Blank CD-R Discs

You’ve just finished your big sales presentation. Someone from the audience approaches you afterward and asks for a copy of the presentation.

You’ll make a better impression if you:

a) ask the person for their email address and tell them you’ll email the presentation later

b) ask for their physical address and tell them you’ll mail a CD later

c) burn them a CD of the presentation on the spot.

In case you didn’t figure it out, the answer is c. Always be prepared with these inexpensive laptop accessories.

9: Stereo Headset

It’s great to be able to watch DVD movies no matter where you are. Imagine watching your favorite flick at 30,000 feet.

There’s just one problem.

The family in the row behind you has absolutely no interest in hearing the dialog from Pulp Fiction.

Do yourself and everyone around you a favor. When you’re watching movies or listening to music in public, use your headphones.

10: Security Device

Laptop security devices come in many shapes and sizes.

For example, most laptops include a security dock that allows you to attach your laptop to some immovable object via cable, much like you’d lock up your bicycle outside the grocery store.
